I wanted to start a series to slowly recount my college experiences and reflect on my journey here at the real HU. I had to conduct a survey and the questions were regarding assisting high school graduates with their college questions. Below is mine and my answer:
I imagine college is nothing like any of the movies or TV shows I’ve seen. Am I right? Can you describe what it is like?
Howard really does remind you of “A Different World” (a TV show you should watch), probably even moreso in the past like the 90s. So I would check that out. But, Howard reminds you of an all-Black high school full of different cliques that operate like mob families. But Howard is also like a big family reunion where everywhere you go, no matter who you talk to from the shuttle driver to the caf workers to people in the A building, someone is looking out for you, encouraging you and loving you. College in general though is all up to you (at Howard they do coddle us a bit more); you have to take care of yourself personally, you have to make sure you are up for class, etc. If you are someone who is used to their parents/guardians doing everything for them, college will be a wake up call… but a necessary one so don’t be afraid. You can be anxious but not afraid especially if you decide to join the Howard Family, someone here will always have your back.
